A rail-fan favorite, Colorado Narrow Gauge pictures the trains of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. Established in 1870, the Rio Grande eventually operated 2,783 miles of track connecting Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah. Serving mountain communities, farms, and mines from the 1800s into the mid-1900s, the Rio Grande ran trains through mountain gorges, and across the highest rail mainline in America to deliver on the D&RG’s early motto, “Through the Rockies, not around them.”

• Rio Grande 494 and 498 lead a westbound freight down the three-rail track five miles south of Alamosa, CO on January 5, 1958.
• Rio Grande 488 and 499 (K-36 and K-37) are leading a westbound 60-car freight through Estrella (Star), CO, eight miles south of Alamosa on July 19, 1956.
• Denver and Rio Grande Western 498, a Class K-37 Mikado (2-8-2), is leading an eastbound freight through Monero Canyon, NM on June 13, 1968.
• Rio Grande Southern 455 is crossing the Bilk Trestle near Vance Junction, Colorado with a southbound freight on June 5, 1951.
• Rio Grande 473 has a northbound Silverton mixed train crossing High Bridge on May 29, 1960.
• The wye at Chama, NM was (and still is) out on the west end of town. It is June 1967 and Denver and Rio Grande Western 487 is leaving Chama with a westbound pipe train.
• Denver and Rio Grande Western 486 is making up a train at Durango, CO in July 1955.
• Denver and Rio Grande Western 490 is leading a southbound freight four miles north of Aztec, NM on the Farmington Branch in August 1958.
• Denver and Rio Grande Western 491, a Class K-37 Mikado (2-8-2), is preparing to head west from Cumbres, CO to Chama on September 28, 1957.
• Denver and Rio Grande Western 473, in yellow paint with a box headlight and “Silverton” stack, is leading a one-car passenger train a mile west of Willow Creek, NM.
• Three Denver and Rio Grande Western locomotives have just returned from Cumbres Turn on June 26, 1956; they are being serviced.
• In this view, 478 is the power for Train #216, the eastbound “San Juan” passenger train. In the near background sits Train #215, its westbound counterpart, which will depart shortly.
